BUSINESS ASSOCIATION CANDIDATES MEETING

WEBSITE: www.southern.nz

Kia ora,

My name is Stevey Chernishov

Upon arrival at this here I approached management to ask them if it would be okay to light a candle in this venue, & they said it would be ok.

Q./  Now I need to ask, does anybody object to me lighting a candle?
A./  No

Alright. I’m going to alight this strawberry cheesecake flavoured candle, because I am here to shift atmospheres in our community. I hope that you smell the aroma throughout the evening.

What I am here to do, is I’m here first & foremost to remind you that we come from a long line of pioneers. I personally go back 163 years through the Cameron line. My great great great great great grandfather D.A. Cameron came here 163 years ago & founded Nokomai Station.

The Māori people & the Scottish people worked together to establish our lands.

They were epic people.

They were adventurers.

They were brave.

They started off whatever they set their mind to, & they followed through to make it happen.

Some of them died along the way.

But a lot of them went on to produce you.

What I want to remind you of is that these are the people who created our maps, these are the people who worked together to create English & Māori translations for our place names. These are the people who created roads from the very beginning & they did not need to go to central government & the UN to ask for hundreds of millions of dollars to borrow & to get things done.

If they did go somewhere, they would have to travel for two weeks to Dunedin to ask for permission.

But a lot of these people were empowered enough within their own means to make ‘cool stuff happen’. That’s what we need to do.

One of the biggest things I am an advocate for,  is to bring about something that is rarely mentioned in the Local Government Act, & it’s called ‘non-regulatory services’. It means that there is a Council who does what empowers you; because you need people who are resourcing you from behind a desk, you need resources published, to make sure that you know what you are capable of.

If you want to build a business, a building development, or run any kind of a service in the community, you should be the ones who are empowered.

We are epic people, just like our pioneer heritage people. We need to remember that there are things we can do, where just like in 1863 a gold rush came to Nokomai that brought 11,000 people into Nokomai. We started our own towns & we made cool stuff happen. That’s what I am here to empower you guys to do..

Let’s make cool stuff happen.
